How To Remove DRM - Get More From Your Rhapsody Subscription

By Gagnes Yuller

This is how to remove DRM and convert protected wma to mp3

One of the very best ways of getting a lot of music fast is by legally downloading it from sites like Rhapsody and Napster. These websites are designed as a very affordable alternative to having to buy CD's at retail stores. The only downside is that they are loaded with copy protection that makes it difficult to enjoy these protected wma files in the same ways as if you buy the more expensive full CD at a store.

The problem that most users will encounter is that warning message you get from all music management software saying that the files are in the protected format. This cop protection prevents you from putting the files in applications such as iTunes. So, simply trying to copy your Rhapsody downloads into another program will not work because of the protection placed in the files by the music subscription company.

When these music services use digital measure to prevent piracy they actually inhibit the usage of the files for the legal user. Most people are going to find and download files illegally anyways and regardless if Rhapsody puts DRM protection on their files or removes it isn't going to stop piracy. It only makes things hard for good paying customers. One of the things is that it locks the music to just one computer or one mp3 player so no one else in your house can enjoy your music. This wouldn't be the case if someone purchased a CD down at the local record shop.

DRM is very hard to deal with and aggravating for everyone and it is also very unpleasing since you have legally downloaded the file but now are unable to use the protected content which is the music the way you want or should be allowed to.

The only drawback to that is that it takes very specialized software that can remove DRM from protected wma files (the kind you get from Rhapsody). There are a lot of software titles that you can download that say they can convert all types of files but just about all of them are unable to remove DRM protection and then convert the file. A good reason for this is that cracking or hacking the protection is illegal, but making a digital copy of the file is permissible by law.

The absolute best application for converting such files is a software program called Tunebite. They have been the leading company when it comes to converting and backing up protected wma files and other protected media files like audio books and movies as well. It's your right to make digital backups of all your downloaded media and Tunebite will allow you to do this very quickly and easily. The only real catch is that you must be the legal owner of the music, meaning you still need to have a valid subscription to make the recordings.
