Mobile network operators vs. Skype: the fight has begun

By Yukko Ahalo

Most likely, big mobile companies realize that their profitable business is greatly threatened by the IP telephony brands such as Skype. American and European companies have left no chances for Skype to interfere with the mobile services business right away, so that it would not be able to do this later.

In the meanwhile the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RUIE) would like to provide amendments controlling the work of this market section. Apart from this, it is said that the restrictions are intended to protect Russian mobile network operators' business.

As a general rule, mobile network operators are against the IP telephony because this software allows users to pay a good deal less than while using usual mobile services. The chief vice-president of one famous mobile operator, claims that the IP telephony services cost 1,5-2 times less than the standard mobile operators do. And at the same time some IP telephony services are absolutely free.

Last month some big foreign-based mobile operators at once have claimed that they forbade using Skype via their networks. Companies even dared to break all the collaborations with Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phones producer, because this manufacturer meant to pre-install Skype on new smart phone models.

But mobile operators are not the only Skype's worst nightmare. First and foremost, Skype is afraid of software platforms such as Apple.

It is claimed that "for instance, Apple can unilaterally remove our programs from its Apple Store, thus limiting Skype's presence in Apple iPads, iPhones. So, they can easily make their own software such as Apple Face Time more competitive". (In this article we express our own free interpretation of what has happened).

Something to think of

Skype is truly the most famous and widely popularized software but its options are not the best. What will they reply to SIP technologies promotion and Asterisk popularization? It is almost impossible to forbid (in the technical respect) and the range of the IP telephony options based on SIP is a good deal wider.

So, the real battle is to be continued.

We are for the IP telephony. And you?
